Is a backhand similar to a wrist shot?

Same as a Wristshot?

A back hand is exactly the same as a wristshot, but opposite. Sound confusing? It's not. Same hand positioning, same sweeping motion, the puck needs to slide from heel to toe on your stick, and you need to follow through for power and accuracy.

Because of the curvature of most hockey sticks today, you do not want the puck to slide from heel to toe on your stick, it will slide off. Keep the puck at the heel of the stick because it is the flattest part of the stick and will stay on the stick better.
